CHAPTER G: A TALE FOR THE PREFECT

Back at The Brave Axe in the late afternoon, the three adventurers found Balefire snoozing.  Arya woke him up, the told him about the coin.  Kronk and Strife briefed him on what they had learned as well.  They all decided that it was time to inform the authorities.  After cleaning up, they sought out the innkeeper, and asked for directions to the Mitrik government center.

Arriving half an hour later, the party arrived at the building housing the Mitrik police prefect’s office.  “State your business,” the sergeant at the front desk said gruffly.

“We have information that might be useful to the prefect of police,” said Arya.

“Three doors down,” said the sergeant. “On the right.  Check your weapons before entering.”

At the police prefect’s office, they told their business to the duty officer.  After a short wait, the duty officer said, “This way please.”  The adventurers were led to a small meeting room.  After few minutes, the prefect came in.  “I am Tovan Lirk, Mitrik police prefect,” he introduced himself.  “Please share this information with me.”

Kronk brought out the coin he had found.  “What does the greatshield mean to you, sir?” he asked Prefect Lirk.  “It’s currency of Ket.  Is that all?”  Kronk could tell that Lirk was concerned, that he had seen such coins before.  He proceeded to tell the prefect everything else he had learned, starting with the drunk young aristocrat who had “dropped” the coin the previous night.

“Yes, Dawes Thellin,” replied Lirk.  “I heard about the incident last night. We know about him.  Son of a prominent family.  Too much money, too much time on his hands.  Talks too much.”

“And the one who got beat up?” continued Kronk.

“We know about him too.  Another rich young rowdy.  As stupid as he is loud.  Not the first time for such misbehavior.  Still, hardly seems significant.”

“We also heard about Ket agents in the city!” Strife added.

Lirk remained unperturbed.  “We know of that too.  We assume Ket has some agents.”  He paused to consider the adventurers before him.

“You aren’t from Mitrik, are you?”  The party admitted they were not.

“Veluna is actually on good terms with the government of Ket,” Lirk explained.  “It’s certain reactionary factions, especially those supporting the hard-line clergy, who are behind most of the problems we’ve been having.  The “agents” you heard about most likely are troublemakers sent by Ketite clergy angry about the Thornward situation.”

He stood up, indicating that the meeting was over.  “Not to worry,” he assured the adventurers.  “But thanks for bringing these matters to my attention.  Should you hear anything else that might be of interest, please don’t hesitate to call on me.  Good day.”  And with that, he left the meeting room.

Dismissed, the party returned to The Brave Axe.  “Maybe we should mind our own business,” muttered Kronk.
