Edward, Arnold and Firiona found themselves commanding armies--armies that appeared to match their own alignments. Strangely, however, none of them recognized any of the other commanders, nor an ominous-looking fourth army also present.
Each of them soon realized what was at stake in the battle: control of the Outer Planes, both upper and lower, as well as control of locations within Sigil itself.
Arnold struck first, seizing control of Pandemonium. A mighty fiend next stepped forth, attempting to take over the Lady's Ward of Sigil, but he was thwarted by the combined efforts of Edward and Firiona, much to the surprise of the fourth army's hidden commander. Firiona occupied the Beastlands as well as the Clerk's Ward of Sigil. Edward seized Yggdrasil, the World Tree. Combat continued among the planes and the wards of Sigil.
During the combat, the members had become aware that the secret master of the fourth army was none other than--the Lady of Pain herself! And the extent of her powers became clear as she took over the Pillar of Skulls without striking a blow in combat, relying solely on her powers of intrigue, subversion and manipulation. None of the party members, alone or in combination, could withstand her powers.
But the battle continued until eventually one army managed to seize control of sufficient territory to declare itself supreme. The army of Firiona triumphed in this day's battle!
As the battle concluded, each party member suddenly realized that the battlefield was receding again into the misty distance. Firiona became aware that she had been evaluated and found worthy; Edward and Arnold were likewise aware of having been evaluated, but they were less certain that they had passed the test. The last vision of the party members was the floating image of the blade-surrounded female visage. The party members now knew who it was--the Lady of Pain!
